WITTE WIEVEN
In the far past some women had great knowledge and could even forecast the future. They were much respected and because of that called: "Witte Wieven", which means: women with wit, women with wisdom. Others called them witches.
The priestesses where chosen out of this group of women.
After their death they were honored by their graves, which had the form of a hill.
During the time of autumn, when the cold set in, one could see white mist emerging from the gravehills, and it was believed they were the ghosts of the dead women.
Therefore it became a habit to call these mists in the form of a human being: witte wieven.
There are many legends about the witte wieven, in some they are bad old women, but in others they are still believed to help those in need.
In this time of Samhain, the witte wieven are travelling free between the realm of the death and our world. Those who are in peace with themselves, won't be harmed by these women, but those who have been treating others unkind will be haunted.
